Was the Bayeux Tapestry Made in France?: The Case for St. Florent of Saumur - The New Middle Ages
It has long been assumed that the Bayeux Tapestry was produced in England which is why George Breech's proposal that it was made in the Loire Valley will not sit pretty with many scholars. This book presents evidence to support Beech's claims that the tapestry was commissioned by William himself and was produced at the textile workshop at the Abbey of St Florent of Daumer, renowned in the 11th century. Based on an analysis of various records, charters and narratives, as well as a fresh interpretation of one episode in the tapestry, the so-called `Breton campaign', he draws on links between William and the abbey, and between the style and content of the tapestry and the abbey's textile workshop. `Artistic affinities' are also proposed between the tapestry and mural paintings and carved stone capitals from churches in the Loire Valley. The book's well-constructed argument will no doubt be critiqued by other historians, although Beech has attempted to pre-empt his critics in the final chapter which raises and answers various objections to his theory.
