Headache and Pain
Editorial Reviews Reviewer: Heather Huang, MD (University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health) Description: This book recounts the scientific discussions on headache and pain at the joint symposium between the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and the International Headache Society (IHS) held in 2012. Purpose: The purpose is to summarize the topics covered during this first ever joint symposium of the two organizations. The objectives of the symposium were to stimulate discussion about pain from different angles and establish potential cooperation and synergies between IASP and IHS. It also sought to involve young scientists and help them build networks to advance their work. Audience: The book is intended primarily for scientists and researchers, but it also targets a wider audience that includes scientists, clinicians, healthcare providers, and policymakers. Features: It begins with background and historical information about both organizations, their membership, and their focus. The book then moves through various topics and their relation to headache and pain: genetics, the role of neuroimaging, physiology, and neurophysiology, nitric oxide and vascular biology, neurogenic inflammation, and brainstem mechanisms, as well as topics such as neurostimulation. The book does a good job of generally covering a broad range of topics as they pertain to headache and pain. Shortcomings include a lack of detail about some of the topics, which may be more relevant for scientists and researchers in this field. Assessment: This offers a good, quick read for those interested in learning what topics were discussed at the symposium. Topics are covered in general terms and the book gives a broad overview. However, at times it lacks details that scientists and researchers may find useful. - Doody's Review Service
