Despite the fact that Artie Shaw was hugely popular and sold over 100 million albums he always prized innovation, technique and experimentation more highly than critical acclaim. He certainly was an innovator; fusing different musical styles together including Classical, Jazz, Bebop, Afro-Cuban and even introduced elements of medieval music into some of his recordings.
