Prior to 1960 the concept of a "musical group/band" was almost unheard of and nearly all music was performed by solo singers with session musicians. The inspiration for bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones & The Beach Boys was The Shadows.
Cliff Richard had become the biggest selling British act and required the services of a full time band which was comprised of Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan. In 1960, with Cliff Richard's support, they stunned everyone by releasing their first single, Apache, without Cliff which spent 5 weeks at No.1. This remarkable success ensured that they would forever be accepted as a stand-alone act as well as Cliff Richard's backing band. They filled both roles with great success for two decades and amazingly only Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Cliff Richard have spent more time at No.1 with their hits than The Shadows.
