Her name is rarely mentioned without the epithet "The Forces Sweetheart" added and she will always be remembered as much for her morale-boosting war efforts as for her magnificent voice. During WW2 she began her own hugely popular radio show in which she performed requests from the troops stationed abroad and from their families in Britain and passed on their messages. She also regularly visited the forces overseas, performing in Egypt, India and Burma and now over 60 years since the end of the war it is impossible to imagine anyone else singing The White Cliffs of Dover or We'll Meet Again.
